Donna Noble: A New Life
Donna rolled over, groaning. The alarm ripped through the air on a dull, grey morning. Donna was shattered, despite getting sleep in the day yesterday. For yesterday was the day which would go down in history as the day the Earth was ‘stolen’ by the Daleks and Davros. Yet, Donna Noble would never know it, just like she would never know her past.
“Urghhh,” Donna dribbled, before toppling out of bed, onto the floor.
She sat bolt upright and pulled herself onto her feet. At least she hadn’t gone to sleep in her clothes again. She opened her door, and slowly traipsed downstairs. It was too early for the ordinary Donna Noble. When she travelled with the Doctor, it was all early mornings, saving the world before breakfast, but this Donna Noble would never know, she couldn’t know.
“Morning star shine, the Earth says hello!” Wilfred grinned, hiding his sadness.
“Alright, Sir!” Donna barked back, jokingly.
“How’s you this morning?” Wilf asked.
“Fine, now I’ve caught up on a bit of sleep,” Donna replied “you know it’s funny, I don’t remember yesterday at all, and yet I was, tired.”
Wilf picked up the daily newspaper, and saw the front page. He was alarmed at the headline: ‘Earth moves across space, and returns in time for tea’ it said.
‘Who thinks up these headlines?’ Wilf thought to himself.
He quickly spilt his cup of tea over the newspaper, and proceeded to put it in the bin. At least there was no chance of Donna rifling through the bin to read it. Wilf was worried about what the future held. Would he still be able to gaze at the stars through his telescope? Would he have to get rid of every blue container and box in the house? What was the limit to things that could jog Donna’s memory, and burn her up? Would it be better to not draw attention to the boxes by not throwing them out? What about the aliens that would invade in the future? How would his granddaughter miss all of them? What would happen if she saw the aliens? Wilf couldn’t bear to think about it, and yet the thoughts kept pushing themselves into the front of his mind like persistent leeches.
The bubble of silence that consumed the Noble’s kitchen broke, as Sylvia Noble came treading down the stairs, complete with pink dressing gown, slippers and hair rollers. She saw Donna, and gave a sympathetic look.
“What’s all this?” Donna asked “why is everyone giving me weird looks? Has someone put something on my back?”
“No, there’s nothing on your back, I was just wondering about your unemployment. When are you going to find a job and stick with it?” Sylvia snapped. It was as if she forgot the Doctor’s words, asking Sylvia to tell her daughter how much she loved her.
“She hasn’t had time,” Wilf said “she was with-”
Wilf had nearly let slip Donna’s adventures in Time and Space, until Sylvia gave him such a dirty look he dropped his toast.
“I dunno, I was thinking of trying to go back to H.C. Clements,” Donna said.
“You can’t, remember? You went of in such a huff they told you to never come back!” Sylvia invented off the top of her head.
“What me?” Donna asked “no. You're kidding me. That was Shelly. I don’t remember me doing it. No, you’re having me on.”
“Err- you did sweetheart,” Wilf said gently “you must have forgotten.”
“Well that’s wizard!” Donna cried, upset.
And she got up and walked right out of the door. She was confused, she must have forgotten so much. Where did everything go? She sat down on a park bench. An image of a blond girl flashed through her mind. Rose. Donna put a hand to her head. Where had this headache come from? Another image flashed through her mind, this time of a black girl in a leather jacket. Martha. Donna’s headache increased, and she slipped off of the bench. A third image flashed through her head, of a brown haired woman. Sarah Jane. Leaning against the bench, Donna struggled for breath. Two people flashed through Donna’s rapidly expanding mind, a black man and a blond haired older woman. Mickey and Jackie. Then Donna saw every person she ever met on her adventures with the Doctor flash through her head, before she finally saw the Doctor himself.
Donna fell sideways onto the ground, until she felt a pair of hands pull her up into a sitting position. She turned her head and saw another blond girl, but one she didn’t recognise.
“My name’s Jenny,” the girl said “I’m a generated anomaly, and I’m here to save you.”
“My head…” Donna cried.
“It’s OK,” Jenny reassured her “I have some regenerative power left from when we last met. You’ll be OK, and still remember all those wonderful times you had. Including when you met me.”
“But why didn’t I remember you?” Donna asked “I remember everything else.”
“Because I’m the one who’s gonna save you,” Jenny said.
Jenny pulled Donna to her feet and led her away. Donna Noble didn’t realise this, but her life was changing, for the better…
End.
