Episode 12: Aquari Aquatics Part 1

It was night and the River Thames was looking darker than ever in the countryside. A huge bridge had been built across it, as the river had recently begun to grow dramatically. It was much wider than it once was. A man with brown-going grey hair was crossing the bridge. There it was, a body in the water. It didn’t look anything like a body now, thought Ken. Ken had seen it from the other side of the long bridge, and now he was closer to it he could see it was not a body at all, but what looked like a shadow.

“Wait, that is a body,” Ken muttered, “I can see its eyes.” Ken gasped as a face in the water smiled up at him. He leaned over the edge of the bridge to get a better glimpse at it. He could see what looked like hair made of water attached to the face, but the face seemed to be made of water too. Ken leaned even further over the side of the bridge, and the body of water jumped up at Ken and tried to grab him. Ken backed away quickly.
“What the hell?” Ken said, and he began to walk back along the bridge. There was a thud beneath him, and Ken quickened his pace. There was another thud and the bridge shook. Ken was now directly in the middle of the bridge, he looked over the side of the bridge again and saw several of the water bodies beneath the bridge. Ken began to run along the bridge, when there was a crash behind him. Ken turned to see that the middle of the bridge had broken in half and the rest of the bridge began to shake too.

“Help!” Ken called out as he heard many more thuds and a large crack appeared in the bridge in front of him. The part of the bridge Ken was standing on turned into a slope as the one unsupported end of it fell into the dark river.
“HELP!” Ken called out again as he slid down the broken bridge into the river, where he saw a face made of water smiling at him. Ken screamed as he was dragged into the depths of the water, by what seemed like the water himself.

OPENING CREDITS

“And next on ACA Radio, a classic old Earth song,” the Radio Presenter’s voice blared out of Lee Hashimoto’s radio, “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!” Lee yawned and got out of bed, next to him, his girlfriend Natalie stirred too.

“Good morning,” Natalie said, stifling a yawn.
“You don’t have to get up yet,” Lee told her, “You can teleport in.”
“No I like to be in early,” Natalie replied, “But you should hurry up, you’re supposed to be at a meeting, in 5 minutes, aren’t you?” Lee swore, ran over to his wardrobe and flung open the doors. He got changed quickly, as Natalie listened to the mornings news.

“A bridge on the River Thames, east Of London, has collapsed,” the Presenter said.
“Under strange circumstances,” the Presenter’s assistant, Sheba added.
“Very strange, it seems to have broken in several places,” the Presenter continued, “The CCTV footage hasn’t picked up anything, and the Press haven’t been allowed anywhere near the broken bridge, which Scientists said would last thousands of years.”
“Well the Scientists have been proved wrong,” Sheba said.
“Indeed they have. Also, a man, who’s name has yet to have been released by the police, was found washed up on a river bank near the bridge, it is assumed that he was on the bridge when it broke.”
“That’s strange,” Natalie commented.
“That’s nice dear,” Lee said, as he dashed in and out of the room, picking up papers and putting them in his briefcase. Lee left the room again to go and clean his teeth.

“I won’t be here later babe,” Natalie called after Lee, “I’m staying at my flat with Natasha, we’re going to have a girls night in before the party tomorrow.”
“Can you get back to mine for midday tomorrow?” Lee asked, “My aunt and Gran are staying over.”
“Yeah sure, will Korena be with them?” Natalie asked.
“I doubt it,” Lee said, “I don’t know where she is at the moment, Gran said something about travelling.”
“So I’ll have to wait longer to meet her then,” Natalie replied.
“Yeah, sorry,” Lee said, kissing Natalie on the lips, and then picking up his briefcase.
“Bye babe,” Natalie said to Lee, and he waved back before rushing from the room.

The TARDIS flew through space as the Doctor, Georgia, Conner and Korena laughed and laughed. They couldn’t stop, what had just happened had been hilarious.
“I can’t believe that!” Georgia said, before she burst out laughing again.
“No, but also, she did think,” Korena began, “She did think that Conner was…” Korena continued to laugh as Conner stopped.
“What did the weird freaky pink alien think I was?” Conner asked, Georgia was laughing and pointing at Conner.
“Seriously, you don’t want to know,” Korena said.
“All that matters is that we stopped the freaky pink alien,” the Doctor explained, “Even though ‘that’ happened.” Georgia and Korena laughed even harder, but Conner was now frowning.
“Seriously, what did the pink alien think I was?” Conner asked.
“She thought you were her husband!” Georgia said, giggling madly.
“Yeah it wasn’t that funny really…” Korena said thinking.
“You know once you think about it, it wasn’t,” Georgia said, sighing.

“Right, where to next?” the Doctor asked, breaking the silence that had followed Georgia’s comment.
“Back home maybe?” Korena asked.
“Yeah, alright,” the Doctor said, pushing a button, then pulling the accelerator.
“I hope Aimee explained where I was,” Korena said, “But this doesn’t mean I’m coming back to stay at home does it?”
“No, you can stay in the TARDIS as long as you want,” the Doctor replied.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave,” Korena said smiling.
“Nor me,” Georgia said enthusiastically.
“Nor me,” Conner added, as the TARDIS flew towards the 40th Century.

“Where shall I land the TARDIS?” the Doctor asked.
“It usually lands itself,” Conner answered.
“Japan,” Korena said, “My mansion?”
“Alright,” the Doctor replied, “Hold on tight.” The TARDIS landed with a jolt throwing Korena and Georgia to the floor, causing Conner to laugh heartily. Georgia glared at Conner, before opening the TARDIS doors.

“Where are we?” Georgia asked.
“Korena’s mansion,” the Doctor replied, looking a little put off.
“I don’t think so,” Georgia replied, as Korena, Conner and the Doctor exited the TARDIS too. The Doctor looked around to see a dark corridor, with huge posters on the walls and doors on both sides of the corridor.
“You’re right,” Korena said, “This is not my mansion.”
“Looks like some kind of Geography science base place,” the Doctor said staring at the posters on the walls of the Earth.

“Are we even in the 40th century?” Georgia asked.
“Um…” the Doctor began but Conner interrupted him.
“This poster has a date on it,” Conner said, “3998.”
“I’m guessing we are at the right time,” Korena said, “Just not the right place, are we going to leave?”
“No, lets explore,” the Doctor said in a dark voice.

“What’s up?” Georgia asked smiling.
“Oh nothing,” the Doctor said, “Who wants to come exploring the Geography place base, with me?” Korena raised her hand enthusiastically, but Conner and Georgia didn’t look amused.
“Geography, failed that,” Georgia muttered.
“Continents and rain and stuff, no thanks,” Conner added.
“Fine, you two stay here, but don’t wander off,” the Doctor ordered, “Seriously, no wandering off, well not very far anyway. Come on Korena.”
“See you later,” Korena said, as she followed the Doctor through one of the doors leading off the corridor.
“Bye!” Georgia replied, “Shall we go in the TARDIS?”
“Sure!” Conner said smiling, as he and Georgia walked away from the TARDIS in the opposite direction to the Doctor and Korena.

Lee Hashimoto appeared in his Office, where Mr Donald Digit was waiting for him. They were doing a presentation to the Prime Minister on the new increase in global warming.

“Sorry I’m late Don,” Lee said, as he opened his briefcase and pulled out several files.
“Don’t worry, the PM hasn’t got here yet,” Donald replied, “Hope he does soon though, I don’t like waiting.”
“You don’t like punctuality either,” Lee said bemused.
“That’s only if people are really early,” Donald said, “I’m neither late nor early, I arrive just in the right moment of time.” Suddenly, a short dark haired man dashed into the room, he was wearing a black suit and tie and he looked rather harassed.

“Mr Toil what are you doing here?” Lee asked.
“Goodness, haven’t you heard?” Mr Toil replied.
“Heard what?” Lee answered.
“The bridge collapsed and poor Ken is dead,” Mr Toil said in a frantic voice.
“What, the man they found on the river bank?” Lee asked, “But he had all the files on the water, they were all organised and they had all been triple checked. He was brilliant.”
“Don’t worry I have all the files, but poor Ken!” Mr Toil exclaimed, looking very sad.
“Yes of course poor Ken, and that bridge was supposed to last for thousands of years,” Lee said, “All those people who worked on it, and all that work Ken did gone.”
“It’s not gone I have Ken’s work here,” Mr Toil said smiling.
“If you’re here then who’ve you left in charge of the company?” Donald asked.
“Oh I can’t stay,” Mr Toil said quickly, “Far too much work, sorry about that, but you have the files, I’ve got to find poor Ken’s lawyer.”
“Yes of course,” Lee said comfortingly, “Good luck.”
“Bye!” Donald called after Mr Toil who rushed off.

Natalie looked up from her work, it was nearly finished. One more paragraph and she could serve on the till, which was much more exciting.

“Nataliea!” Amita squeaked as she ran into the room. Amita was one of Natalie’s best friend, who worked at the supermarket that Natalie also worked for. Natalie, however, was serious about her job, and she was only a step away from becoming the manager of the supermarket. Amita, meanwhile, was not so serious, but she was learning several languages so she could become a linguist. She was working at the supermarket to pay for all her language lessons.
“Mitty!” Natalie replied with a huge smile on her face. Natalie and Amita hugged, and then Amita pulled something out of her bag.
“Guess what I have!” Amita exclaimed.
“What?” Natalie asked.
“Two tickets for that new film that you wanted to see,” Amita said, “It’s for tomorrow at 11 till half 1 then we can go partying till midnight! The film is starring HOTTY Kieron Moor.”
“Aw, I can’t go Amita,” Natalie began.
“Yoshiro Nakamura is pretty fit too, but he is foreign and I haven’t seen many of his films,” Amita interrupted, “They are all in Japanese like Korena’s, will I ever meet her?”
“I’m sorry Amita, but even I haven’t met her yet,” Natalie replied, “And as I said before I really can’t go.”
“But you’ve got to, I don’t want to be stuck with Delilah she’s got real freaked about something recently,” Amita said, “And Natasha says she’s skint, which is rubbish.”
“I can’t go, I’m greeting Lee’s mum and Gran and maybe even Korena!” Natalie explained.
“Oooh, scrap the film I want to meet Korena!” Amita said excitedly.
“No, Amita you go to the film, it’s highly unlikely that Korena will be there anyway,” Natalie replied.
“Oh, alright then,” Amita said dully, “I’ll bring Delils. See you later, you going on tills in a bit? Don’t understand why you enjoy it; if I was nearly manager then I wouldn’t go on tills.”
“I like going on the tills, it’s nice to be serving customers,” Natalie said, “Anyway, see you later.”
“Yeah, alright,” Amita said, “Bye then!” Amita left Natalie’s office with a sulky expression on her face, she almost walked into Natalie’s identical twin sister Natasha, who was going to see Natalie.

“Natasha!” Amita exclaimed.
“Mitty!” Natasha shouted as she hugged her friend, Natalie left her office to see what was going on, she hated it when all her friends decided to see her at work.
“Nataliea!” Amita exclaimed and hugged Natalie.
“I just saw you,” Natalie said exasperatedly.
“Oh yeah,” Amita replied, smiling, “Gotta go!” Amita dashed off with a wave, leaving the identical twins alone.

“I bought some flowers for Lee,” Natasha told Natalie.
“Why?” Natalie asked.
“It’s his birthday tomorrow, see I am not forgetful,” Natasha replied, “You seem to be though by the look on your face.”
“Lee’s birthday was last month,” Natalie said, “Me and him went to Dubai and you forgot and thought I was dead.”
“That doesn’t seem like something I would do,” Natasha snapped, “I was not trying to get all your money before you say it!”
“You called my lawyer to see how much money I left you,” Natalie replied.
“At least I was going to use a load of it to pay for your funeral,” Natasha snarled.
“I think you should go now,” Natalie said.
“Fine,” Natasha muttered and reluctantly walked off, dropping the flowers she had been carrying in a bin. Natalie wondered why Natasha had bought Lee flowers, as she walked back into her office.

The Doctor and Korena walked down a corridor and then through a door into what looked like a Geography lab, there were soil samples in tubes and all kinds of maps littered the desks in the room.

“Doctor look there’s a window!” Korena exclaimed, rushing over to it. The Doctor followed her and together they looked out the window. They could see an ocean before them, with huge waves and no signs on any ships.
“We’re by the seaside,” the Doctor commented.
“Look how high up we are,” Korena said staring down to see waves crashing at the base of the strange, huge, building they were in.
“We’re in some sort of sea defence base by the look of it,” the Doctor explained, “Look you can see the rest of this building over there, it looks like it goes on forever.”
“The sea does look bad,” Korena said, “It was getting very bad before I left to come with you. Very few ships on the sea now, and a couple of the ocean bases were destroyed, most people managed to teleport out, but some didn’t survive.”

“I wonder where we are,” the Doctor said, “By the look of it, it’s the North Sea.”
“The North sea, isn’t that by England?” Korena asked.
“Yeah,” the Doctor replied.
“How can you tell?” Korena asked.
“The colour,” the Doctor replied simply, Korena looked amazed. The Doctor walked away from the window and looked at some of the equipment in the lab.
“This here looks like a map of Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire,” the Doctor said, looking at the map, “There are huge defences like this along all these coasts, protecting the people from the might of the ocean.”

“Hands in the air!” a voice ordered from the doorway. The Doctor and Korena turned to see three men pointing guns at them.
“I said hands in the air, or I shoot!” the man who had spoke before ordered, his finger poised on the trigger of his gun. The Doctor and Korena obliged.
“Now, what are you doing here? We don’t like trespassers,” the man said angrily.

Georgia and Conner ran down a long flight of stairs. At the bottom of the stairs was a fire exit, so Georgia opened the door. Wind suddenly hit them and Georgia shielded her eyes from the wind.
“Look, there are stairs leading down from the exit,” Conner told Georgia, “I can see lights over there, we must be near a city or something.”
“Lets find out!” Georgia said excitedly through the noise of the wind. Georgia and Conner walked through the fire exit and began to descend down the stairs. Georgia looked up and poked Conner in the back.
“What?” Conner asked, then he realised what she was looking shocked about. The stairs were on the side of a gargantuan metallic building. The building seemed to be straight and it seemed to go on forever. The building was extremely tall and Georgia and Conner were very near to the bottom of it.

“It’s like a wall,” Georgia commented.
“It’s huge,” Conner said, stating the obvious.
“Do you think the Doctor knows what it is?” Georgia asked.
“Knowing him, yes,” Conner replied, “Should we go back?”
“Do you want to?” Georgia asked.
“I’d like to find more out about this thing,” Conner replied.
“Well we could, hey look there’s a man!” Georgia exclaimed, “Down there!” Georgia pointed to the ground, where a man was walking through a field.
“Lets ask him,” Conner suggested and he and Georgia rushed down the stairs, which led onto a path, which led through the field that the man was walking through.

“Hey you!” Georgia called, and the man stopped. Georgia and Conner reached the man, Conner clutched his chest.
“Are you alright?” the man asked Conner.
“I’m fine, just a stitch,” Conner said, “I’m Conner by the way.”
“I’m Dash,” the man replied, he was wearing a strange orange gown, and he was also wearing a rather haughty expression.
“Like the Incredibles character, cool, I’m Georgia,” Georgia said, shaking Dash’s hand.

“Is there something you want?” Dash asked.
“We wondered what that huge thing was,” Georgia said, “What is it?”
“It protects us from the ocean,” Dash replied.
“So the sea’s on the other side of that thing,” Georgia said.
“Yes, but why can’t they let the natural course of the Earth happen,” Dash said, “Global warming suddenly appears and they decide that they have to plunge the country into massive debt to build these giant things, they’re eye saws, we said goodbye to beaches and seaside and candy floss and donkey riding...”
“You still had donkey riding?” Georgia asked, “I haven’t seen anybody riding a donkey on a beach for ages.”
“Because that’s important,” Conner said sarcastically.

“Oh yeah sorry, why did global warming suddenly happen anyway?” Georgia asked Dash.
“It’s hard to explain, but we reckon the governments behind it,” Dash explained, “I have some friends who could tell you more.”
“Ooh alright,” Georgia replied.
“Shouldn’t we get back to the Doctor,” Conner muttered to Georgia.
“It’s only just round the corner,” Dash insisted, “You must come, since you seem so interested. We have a great following around the world.”
“What do you mean?” Georgia asked.
“Follow me,” Dash replied as he began to walk off. Georgia looked at Conner who shrugged and they both began to follow Dash towards the town.

Donald rushed into the office and Lee stood up nervously, Lee was about to talk to the Prime Minister of Great Britain.
“He’s just arriving by teleport!” Donald exclaimed.
“I hope he takes us seriously,” Lee replied.
“I’m sure he will,” Donald answered, “Global warming has accelerated at an alarming speed, there has to be something behind it.”
“But its not global warming,” Lee said, as he saw the heavy rain outside, “It’s just the oceans are getting larger and stronger, do you notice it getting any warmer?”
“I suppose not,” Donald answered, “But where are the ice caps going?”
“Hopefully Antony and Quen will be able to find out,” Lee replied.

Two men struggled against the heavy snowfall as they walked across the ice. Antony and Quentin were on a research mission, and they had to get to the centre of the ice field.
“Not much further now,” Quentin said, through the wind.
“Quentin Oaks, you are the biggest bloody optimist I know,” Antony snapped, Quentin had been telling him it wasn’t that far for over half an hour.
“No, but seriously it’s just a couple more metres, then we can take our sample,” Quentin said.

“Why couldn’t we have taken our sample back at camp?” Antony asked.
“That’s where the ice is thinnest, we need some thick ice,” Quentin replied.
“Hooray for thick ice,” Antony said sarcastically.
“Once we’ve finished getting our samples then we can head back to camp,” Quentin said optimistically, “Of course we can’t teleport back home from there.”
“Why the bloody hell didn’t they build a teleport pod in the Arctic?” Antony wondered, “I mean this is where you need one most.”

“Come on we’re here,” Quentin said happily, as there was a thudding noise beneath them. Antony looked at the ground, there was a crack.
“There’s a crack!” Antony shouted.
“Don’t worry I’m sure everything’s fine,” Quentin said, as the crack got bigger, then suddenly something smashed out of the ice and flew into the air. The thing landed back on the ground and began to pull Antony through the crack.

“No!” Quentin exclaimed, as he grabbed Antony’s hands.
“It’s freezing!” Antony stuttered, “It is water!”
“Calm down, I’ve got you,” Quentin said, but with a jerk Antony was dragged down through the crack and Quentin heard a distinct splash, amid Antony’s cries of shock and terror.
