Episode 5: Angels and Demons part 5
“No!” the Doctor exclaimed.
“Kill me!” Conner exclaimed, “I’ve already lived a life! I’ve had so much fun with you Doctor, I’ve seen it all: Planets, monsters, aliens and stars. I’ve seen so much compared to others, Red’s not seen any of it, she has hardly lived at all, but she will! I’ll die!”
“But Conner since you’ve seen it all, surely that’s a reason for you staying alive,” Georgia pointed out.
“Red has a family,” Conner replied.
“You have loads of friends,” Georgia replied, “Me, Zac, Kaylie, the Doctor-“
“Georgia shut up I’m sure Red has loads of friends too,” Conner snapped. Rack, meanwhile, had sat down on a chair made of bones and was leering at the Doctor.
“Red is not going die she is only a little girl!” Dalen shouted.
“Rack will probably break the bargain anyway, we need to just decide who is in more immediate danger,” Gertrude said.
“That’s Conner, but neither of them are going to die!” Georgia said, “Doctor, what do you think?”
“I’ll help you make the prediction come true,” the Doctor said to Rack, looking at the ground.
“Which one?” asked Rack, who was still leering.
“The Little Red Riding Hood one,” the Doctor replied.
“NO!” Dalen shrieked as Red stared at the Doctor her eyes wide.
“But Doctor, surely you should refuse his offer,” Georgia said, “We can’t let a little girl get killed-“
“I’ve made my choice Georgia,” the Doctor replied.
“This means we don’t get Roast Human,” Yap said into Kap’s ear.
“Why?” Kap asked.
“Cause a group of wolves is going to eat her,” Yap replied, “Rack’s got them all locked up in that cage.”
“I thought they were pets,” Kap remarked.
“So Red will die, the boy will live,” Rack said, and with a wave of his hand the ropes that had tied Conner up came loose and fell to the ground.
“RED RUN!” Dalen shouted at Red, as Dalen was seized by two Goblins. Red backed away and turned and ran, but she ran straight into a particularly large Goblin, who grabbed her and pushed her back into the clearing.
“Doctor, you can’t!” Red said, “You can’t decide who lives and who dies! I don’t want to die.” Red sobbed and began to cry into her small hands.
“You let her go!” Georgia said starting forwards as Ziap, Yap and Kap seized her from behind. Consequently, Gertrude ran over to the Doctor, as did Conner.
“Doctor, what are you doing?” Gertrude whispered.
“We’ve saved Conner, now we have to save Red,” the Doctor muttered in Gertrude’s ear.
“Excuse me can you end the mothers meeting, we need to get on with my plan,” Rack said.
“Hello Georgie, remember us?” Yap said to Georgia as Rack stood up.
“Unfortunately yes,” Georgia said, looking away from the three Goblins.
“Red must travel to her Grandmother’s house, where she will meet me,” Rack explained, “She will run from the house and run straight into a pack of wolves, which you three will let loose.” Rack pointed at Yap, Kap and Ziap, who nodded.
“How am I supposed to help?” the Doctor asked.
“You are going to lead Red to her Granny’s because it is very likely that she will attempt to escape,” Rack replied, “Meanwhile, your friends will be tied up, with my other Goblins nearby. If you go against the plan then my Goblins will push your friends into the bonfire.”
It was only a few minutes later when the Doctor took Red by the hand and lead her away from the clearing. Rack was also leaving, transforming into Granny as he walked. A large group of goblins were dragging a cage full of Wolves towards Granny’s house. Gertrude, Georgia, Dalen and Conner were all tied around a post, the bonfire burning brightly next to them.
“How could you Doctor?” Red said, “How could you go with that Devil’s plan?”
“Conner’s my friend, if I went against his will then Conner would have been killed,” the Doctor replied, “I’ve already lost him once.”
“So I get killed instead,” Red replied.
“You are not going to die,” the Doctor whispered.
“Oh but you have to make sure I do now, or all your friends will die,” Red snapped.
“I believe in my friends,” the Doctor replied.
“Well how do you think that they’ll be able to escape?” Red asked.
“There’s always a way,” the Doctor answered, “We’re at the house, what I want you to do is walk up to the door, then run back to me.”
“But why not just run now?” Red asked.
“Because while the Goblins and Rack are distracted I can fix the coordinates of the teleport,” the Doctor said.
“What’s a teleport?” Red asked.
“It can transport you to places,” the Doctor replied.
“But when we are transported elsewhere, what next?” Red asked.
“I don’t have time to tell you what next, just go,” the Doctor ordered. As Red walked away from the Doctor, Ziap, Yap and Kap’s eyes followed her as they began to unlock the wolf’s cage. As the Goblins looked elsewhere, the Doctor pressed his sonic screwdriver to the Vortex Manipulator and set the coordinates. As Red reached the front door of her Granny’s house, Rack smiled. Suddenly, Red turned and sprinted away from the house.
Back at Rack’s camp, Georgia had hatched a plan in her head. Red had realised that Conner, Dalen, Gertrude and Georgia were all tied round the middle using the same rope. The Goblins had stupidly not tied their arms or legs at all. All Georgia needed to do was cut the rope with a knife and all four of them would be free.
“Erm Goblin?” Georgia said.
“What?” said the large Goblin standing nearby.
“You know you aren’t going to get any Human meat,” Georgia replied.
“Yeah I know,” the Goblin grunted.
“Well don’t you think that’s unfair?” Georgia asked.
“What do you mean?” the Goblin asked.
“Well Rack has denied you your favourite food even when we’re just standing here,” Georgia said.
“Do you want them to eat us?” Conner whispered.
“Shush, I think she’s got a plan,” Gertrude whispered to Conner.
“I must serve Rack, he is the Devil,” the Goblin explained, “And he saved our lives.”
“But, what’s your name?” Georgia questioned.
“Gragrorg,” Gragrorg replied.
“Well, Gragrorg, you don’t seem like a stupid Goblin,” Georgia said, “But it’s obvious that Rack isn’t the Devil and do you want to know who set off the volcano on your home planet?”
“That wasn’t set off it was a natural disaster,” Gragrorg snapped.
“It was Rack, he blew up the volcano so he could destroy the majority of your race and made the rest of you his slaves,” Georgia said, “And you’ve been slaving away doing his bidding.”
“It’s true, Rack set off the volcano!” Gertrude said.
“But you lot would say that,” Gragrorg replied, “You want to be set free.”
“No we don’t, but why won’t you accept fresh meat, when it is this close,” Georgia said in a seductive manner. Gragrorg smiled and began to walk towards her knife outstretched.
“Georgia, what was this plan?” Dalen asked, “Did it involve getting killed.” Gragrorg had almost reached Georgia, when she kicked him in the stomach and snatched the knife from him. She cut the rope and it fell to the ground, releasing them all. The other Goblins saw that their prisoners had escaped and surrounded them in a great circle.
“NOOOOOOOO!” Rack screamed. The Goblins unlocked the cage in panic and the wolves dashed out of their cage after Red, who also began to scream. Red reached the Doctor, who grabbed her hand and placed it on the manipulator and they vanished, just before the wolves reached the spot that the Doctor had been standing.
“Oh dear,” Kap said, the Wolves turned and ran at the three Goblins, as Rack smashed through the window of the house. Ziap, Kap and Yap turned and ran away from the Wolves. Rack saw the Wolves and shot a fireball from his hand which hit them with such force that the whole pack was killed.
“Sir, what do we do?” Yap asked.
“We return to camp,” Rack ordered, “Kill all the Humans, except the little girl.”
Back at the camp, the Doctor appeared in the middle of the circling Goblins.
“Doctor!” Georgia said.
“What’s going on?” asked Gragrorg, stepping away from the circle, “Why is that little girl still alive?”
“Rack changed his plans, he wants you all to go back into the cave,” the Doctor improvised.
“Nah, we don’t follow Rack anymore,” Gragrorg snarled, “He destroyed our home planet, it was Rack! He only saved us to make us his slaves!”
“Georgia did you tell him all this?” the Doctor asked.
“Perhaps,” Georgia replied.
“Georgia, you were brilliant,” Conner said, “Wasn’t quite sure whether you planned that bit at the end though.”
“Rack isn’t even the real Devil,” Gragrorg shouted, as the other Goblins gasped in astonishment, “We’ve been doing a fake Devil’s bidding!” The Goblins roared.
“So, why don’t you find him and make your feelings clear?” the Doctor suggested.
“Because we’re hungry,” Gragrorg replied.
“What’s that got to do with it?” the Doctor asked.
“You Humans are on the menu,” Gragrorg said smiling as Rack flew out of the forest with a look of rage in his face. Yap, Kap and Ziap were running below him, looking anxious and scared.
“DOCTOR!” Rack roared, “You went against me, that little girl should be dead!”
“Yes well, we didn’t shake on it did we,” the Doctor said cheerfully.
“Goblins kill all the Humans!” Rack ordered. Ziap, Yap and Kap ran into the Goblins, who didn’t move.
“We don’t follow your orders anymore, imposter,” Gragrorg snarled.
“What are you talking about?” Rack asked.
“Yeah, we must follow the Devil,” Yap said.
“Kill the Humans,” Ziap added.
“But don’t kill the little girl,” Kap said, “See I remembered that bit.”
“SHUT UP!” Rack ordered.
“This Rack is a fake, he isn’t the real Devil,” Gragrorg said, and the other Goblins nodded in agreement, “If he was the real Devil he wouldn’t care about prophecies and the like. Also he destroyed our home planet, by setting off that huge volcano, so that we would become his slaves.”
“Don’t believe him!” Rack shouted.
“I’m sorry sir, but we believe our kind’s beliefs over yours,” Ziap said, as Yap nodded in agreement and Kap looked around with a dazed look on his face.
“NOO!” Rack flew above the Goblins and shot fireballs at the Goblins, who scattered. One fireball hit the bonfire which collapsed and began to burn the grass around it.
“Duck!” the Doctor said as Rack aimed a fireball at Georgia who screamed, as Conner pushed her out the way.
“Thank you,” Georgia said to Conner breathlessly. Dalen grabbed Red and they ran straight into Gragrorg.
“You thought you’d escape, so we don’t get any meat,” Gragrorg snarled, “This is Goblins victory!” Gragrorg started forward licking his lips, when Thomas Auckland, Red’s father, knocked Gragrorg out with an axe.
“Daddy!” Red said, “I’m so sorry, I just had to find out what was going on.”
“Of course you did, what is going on?” Thomas asked.
“No time to explain,” Dalen said, “We’ve got to get out of here.” A fireball shot past Dalen and hit a tree, causing it to fall into another tree, setting fire to both of them.
“The forest is going to catch fire, Dalen you take Red home,” Thomas said.
“Yes Thomas, be careful,” Dalen called and ran off with Red.
“Have you seen rack like this before?” Yap asked Kap, as they ducked behind the stone stage, which Conner was going to killed on.
“Who?” Kap asked.
“RACK YOU IDIOT!” Yap shouted. Yap got so annoyed at Kap that he began to strangle him, as a fireball hit Kap and Yap, and in a second they had both died. Georgia snatched up the dagger which she had dropped and ran across the clearing. Ziap blocked her path.
“Get out of my way or I’ll stab you!” Georgia said nervously.
“GEORGIA!” Conner shouted and Georgia fell flat onto the ground as a fireball missed her by inches and hit Ziap in the face. The Doctor and Gertrude ran over to Georgia and picked her up. The three of them ran towards the forest, followed closely by Conner.
“Oh no you don’t Doctor!” Rack shouted and flew after them, his dark cloak billowing.
“You three carry on,” the Doctor said.
“But Doctor!” Georgia cried.
“You heard him carry on,” Gertrude hissed, and they ran off, through the now burning trees.
“Doctor, you are not going to survive me,” Rack said, “And once I have killed you, I’ll make sure I kill all your friends!”
“Listen to me Rack!” the Doctor said, “I realise you are annoyed that you can’t stay on your planet anymore, but I can’t either. I do good not evil and I’m sure you could do.”
“Evil is good in my opinion!” Rack snarled.
“Then you give me no choice,” the Doctor said getting out his sonic screwdriver and a small silvery object.
“What are you doing?” Rack asked.
“This is a permanent tracker,” the Doctor said holding up the silvery object, “Once you are attached to it the authorities will be able to find you wherever you go, it won’t just be Gertrude Gillywater following you around. Just one thing though, what were you doing at the Spidership?”
“I had to make sure that several things happened,” Rack replied, “I released Roger Ummelmann from UNIT base in Portsmouth, knowing that he would find his way back onto the Spidership and get killed. I made a strange noise, making sure that Captain Price would find the Daleks and get captured. I lowered the shields on the Magnet Warrior ship, so that Dalek Gain would be able to get on board. The last thing I did was steal a phone off an already dead passenger and phone Conner Bennet, so that he would go looking for his parents and die. But enough chat, I’d better be going!”
Rack shot a fireball at the Doctor, who ducked. Suddenly, a white light appeared in the middle of the clearing, which was now full of dead Goblins. The Doctor could just make out a shining humanoid shape, before Rack and the shape vanished. The Doctor stood up and saw Thomas Auckland was standing nearby.
“Thomas, what are you doing here?” the Doctor asked.
“I came to look for Red, who I found, but what about my mum?” Thomas replied.
“She’s locked in a cupboard in her house,” the Doctor said.
“Then we need to get there and quickly, this fire is going to get much worse,” Thomas said. The Doctor got out the vortex manipulator, which he had found very useful and typed something into it.
“Put your hand on here,” the Doctor told Thomas, who obeyed and in a flash the Doctor and Thomas had also vanished.
Gertrude, Conner and Georgia were still running through the trees.
“There’s going to be a forest fire,” Gertrude said.
“Where’s Red gone?” Conner asked.
“She ran off with Dalen,” Gertrude replied.
“Where are we going?” Georgia asked.
“To my spaceship,” Gertrude replied, “There’s a lot of technology inside, which needs saving.” They turned a corner and reached Gertrude’s cottage, unfortunately the fire was close behind them.
“Inside quickly,” Georgia uttered staring at the flames. Gertrude unlocked the door and rushed inside picking up a gun, a sonic detector and a number of metallic objects, as she rushed round her house. She ran into her living room and pushed a panel in on the wall. The whole cottage transformed itself into a spaceship.
“Whoa, cool ship,” Conner commented. Georgia looked through a window; the fire had reached the spaceship. Gertrude, meanwhile, was sitting in a squashy chair, that faced the spaceship’s controls. She was pressing a number of different buttons, while making frustrated sounds.
“Gertrude, is this ship going to take off?” Georgia asked.
“No, we need more energy, which we don’t have,” Gertrude replied.
“Then I’m really sorry, but we’re going to have to abandon it if we want to survive,” Georgia looked at Gertrude, who sighed.
“Come on then, RUN!” Gertrude ran out of the spaceship, followed closely by Georgia and Conner. They ran along the path towards the village as fast as they could.
As soon as Dalen arrived at the village she ran over to a large bell that was kept on the side of the village hall. This bell was to be used if there was an emergency and there certainly was this time, the fire was spreading and quickly.
“Dalen, what are you doing?” Red asked.
“I’m gathering the villagers,” Dalen replied, as she began to ring the bell. Helga Auckland rushed out of her house, as did many others.
“Red oh you’re OK, thank you for bringing her back Dalen,” Helga said smiling.
“More importantly the forest is on fire, what should we do?” Dalen asked.
“I think we should wait for my husband,” Helga replied.
“And the Doctor,” Red added.
“I thought he’d gone bad, but he hadn’t,” Dalen commented, “He saved you from Rack.”
“But Rack could still be alive,” Red replied, as Georgia, Gertrude and Conner appeared out of the forest.
“Gertrude Gillywater?” Helga asked.
“She’s not really mad,” Dalen whispered in Helga’s ear.
“I’m Gertrude, I was never really mad, my memories were mixed up,” Gertrude introduced herself to the villagers.
“Is Rack alive?” Dalen asked.
“We don’t know, the Doctor told us to leave him,” Conner said. The fire was almost at the village, some of the villagers were beginning to run away.
“There’s a storm coming, or very heavy rain at least,” Dalen said, “You can’t see the moon or the stars, only dark black clouds, but they have to break soon.”
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think the Doctor has much chance of being alive,” Gertrude said to Georgia and Conner.
“He’d never leave us, I know he wouldn’t,” Georgia said.
“If he is gone, we can’t work the TARDIS,” Conner said, “We’ll never get back home.” The remaining villagers stood silently, as the fire got closer and closer until, suddenly the Doctor appeared with Thomas and an old lady.
“Granny!” Red shouted and she ran to hug her Granny.
“Thomas, I’m so glad you’re OK,” Helga said and Thomas hugged her tightly.
“DOCTOR!” Georgia and Conner shouted and ran at him, but he held out a hand to stop them.
“Before we do all that, I need to make sure that it rains,” the Doctor said and pointed his sonic screwdriver at the sky and the rain poured from the sky, extinguishing the fire.
“Doctor, what happened to Rack?” Georgia asked.
“He vanished when a strange Shining Humanoid appeared,” the Doctor replied.
“What was it?”
“Something good, I think.”
“Doctor, thank you for everything,” Red said and her parents shook hands with the Doctor. Red ran forward and hugged the Doctor around the middle.
“I’d better be going now,” the Doctor said as Red and her parents walked off through the rain, hand in hand.
“Goodbye Georgia and Conner,” Dalen said, “And the Doctor of course, you’ve opened my eyes.”
“I’m glad we’ve done something to help you,” the Doctor said and Dalen waved and ran towards her shop, not wishing to get soaked.
“Gertrude, I’ve got something of yours,” the Doctor said and took out the vortex manipulator, “This thing has been very useful, it saved me, Red, Thomas and Granny, thank you for lending me it.”
“It’s nothing, you gave me my mind back,” Gertrude replied.
“I heard your ship got destroyed,” the Doctor said, “Do you need a lift anywhere? The TARDIS is a much better way to travel.”
“You know what Doctor, I’m getting old,” Gertrude said, “It’s time I stop chasing Rack around and settle down. I think I’d like to settle down here.”
“Are you sure, I mean the Doctor’s old and he hasn’t settled down,” Georgia pointed out.
“I’m sure,” Gertrude said and Georgia and her hugged, Gertrude whispered in Georgia’s ear, “Look after the Doctor.” The Doctor and Gertrude shook hands cheerfully and they walked inside the TARDIS. Gertrude watched as it dematerialised. Red heard the noise and rushed out of her house, to see the TARDIS fade completely.
“Excuse me, Gertrude?” Red said.
“What is it?” Gertrude asked.
“I figured you’ll need somewhere to stay, while you choose a house,” Red said smiling. Gertrude smiled back and followed Red towards her house.
Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor pressed a few buttons on the console.
“Where next?” the Doctor asked.
“I don’t mind,” Conner replied, “Future.”
“Doctor what’s that they beeping sound?” Georgia asked, as the beeping got louder. The Doctor’s face showed a look of shock. The Doctor opened a panel on the floor and took out a purple coloured ball that was creating the beeping noise while flashing.
“What’s that?” Conner asked.
“Really bad news,” the Doctor said and he pressed another button on the console.
TO BE CONTINUED in Message Received
Next Time:
“There’s a hole in the wall,” a Chinese man said, staring into the dark hole.
“It has escaped.”
“The monster is one of the worst in the galaxy,” the Doctor explained, “It’s incredibly fast, it can survive in space…”
“Bring on the wall.”
“Ysabelle, where are you?”
“Has anyone seen Bao?”
“What about the Doctor?”
